Hamada's Bio:

I am Hamada Al-Qabat, a visual artist from a land of peace and resistance, from the land called Gaza. I have lived through more than five wars in Gaza. I lost many friends and relatives and lost all meaning of life. I grew up as an artist in an unstable environment with many crises and living in a state of emergency all the time, but all of that has not deterred me from showing the world the true picture of resistance and everyday survival in Gaza. It makes me more determined to continue my artistic career and create art that resembles me and expresses me as a human being. During my life under the Israeli siege of Gaza, I have been greatly influenced by the community in my city, and by many communities’ artistic initiatives, driven by the great responsibility I felt after witnessing great fatigue, exhaustion, and suffering in the eyes of my family over the years. Through my artistic works, I express their lives and the contradictions, crises, and instability that the people of Gaza are experiencing in light of tension and fear of the unknown. Through my art I wish to highlight the beautiful humanitarian cause that has become ugly as a result of the genocide.

I have held a residency at the Spanish Academy in Rome in 2023, and a residency at Windows Contemporary Art in 2019 and 2021. I held my first art exhibition at the French Consulate in Jerusalem with my project entitled “Bright Colors” with children who were psychologically affected during the 2020 war on Gaza, and another project entitled “Creation” in 2021 with children with disabilities. I have worked as an expressive art trainer in the Safe Spaces Project with the Tamer Foundation for seven years, and participated in several group exhibitions, the last of which was at the Mohamed Brouisa Gallery at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

I was awarded an artist residency in Belgium before the Oct 2023 Genocide of Gaza started and have been unable to return to my family in Gaza. My wife, one year old daughter, mother and other family members are stuck in Rafah, and it has been unbearable being separated from them. I am the only one who supports my family and I have been trying to provide for them through the sales of my art. I will continue fighting with my art, and hope to open the eyes of humanity through my art. Your support would mean much more than I can ever express in words.
